GHK-CU / WHAT THE TESTS FOUND

What has GHK-Cu research actually shown?

Loren Pickart wanted to know why older tissue made less protein. His work led to tests of skin, wounds, and genes. Most strong results still come from cells or animals.

Did GHK-Cu help skin cells make collagen?

Loren Pickart's work led to a test of human skin cells. After GHK-Cu was added, collagen output rose [1]; collagen is the strong protein under your skin. The paper’s minute scale ran from 10 to minus 12 through 10 to minus 11 and peaked near 10 to minus 9, while a cleanup protein carried 9 only as its paper label. Those numbers don't become a cream dose, and the cell count stayed the same.

That last fact matters. If there had been more cells, they might have made more collagen just because there were more of them. Instead, the same group of cells made more. Researchers saw a reason to study tissue repair further.

Other dish tests found more elastin, the protein that lets skin spring back, and more of the material that supports skin [3][6]. The study followed 2 proteins that clear worn tissue. GHK-Cu changed how much the cells made. Copper then helps new collagen and elastin become strong [3].

These were cell tests. A cream has to pass through your outer skin before it can reach those cells. The work doesn't prove that a jar will improve your skin, or that a shot will help your body over time. For your decision, you need a sound test in people.

What changed inside cells after GHK was added?

Pickart and another researcher studied genes, the instructions inside each cell. GHK turned some instructions up and others down [2]. Among those that changed most, 59% became more active and 41% became less active. The study didn't show that every change was helpful.

Some changed instructions help cells clear worn protein. In that set, 41 became more active and 1 became less active. Other changes dealt with care of DNA and protection from cell harm. Those findings only raise questions for tests in people.

You may see claims that GHK changed 4,000 genes. The paper itself gave a rough count near 2,100 [2]. Neither count proves that anyone healed faster or felt better, since more activity can help or hurt and the effect depends on which gene changed.

The researchers studied results from human cells kept outside the body. They didn't test a treatment in people. For you, the finding is a reason for more work, not proof of a health gain.

What changed inside cells after GHK was added?

Did GHK-Cu speed wound healing?

Pickart later studied wounds. Some rat wounds closed faster with GHK-Cu, while reviews found more collagen, more new blood vessels, and less damage near rat wounds [6]. Rat healing doesn't prove faster healing in a person.

One test put GHK into a soft gel, where human repair cells released more of a protein used to grow blood vessels [11]. The dish held from 1 to 500 billionths of a gram per milliliter. Researchers traced the change to 1 spot on the cell that receives chemical messages. No person received the gel.

Another GHK-Cu gel sped repair and left thick new collagen [10]. A coated mesh kept human skin cells alive and fought two kinds of germs within one hour [12]. One coating used 1 millimole per liter, a lab measure of how much was mixed into liquid. The papers also followed 2 substances tied to new blood vessels.

A collagen pad holding GHK also helped rat skin heal faster [14]. These early findings support tests in people. They don't show that GHK-Cu can treat your wound now. A doctor still needs proven wound care to guide you.

What did the small human skin tests find?

Pickart's skin work led to a few small tests in people. One review compared GHK-Cu with a cream that had no active drug [3]. Some users had skin that felt firmer, looked clearer, and had softer lines. The review also drew on cell tests.

Getting GHK through your skin is hard, so a 2025 review examined a lab-made form with a fat-like part attached and found that the altered form crossed more easily. Very small needles helped about 134 nanomoles pass through; a nanomole is a lab measure for an amount far too small to weigh at home [15]. Almost none crossed skin left whole.

That's the catch with any serum, which is a thin skin liquid. GHK-Cu can't affect a cell unless enough reaches it. The amount listed on a jar isn't the amount that reaches living skin below.

Which claimed benefits have the strongest backing?

Pickart’s clearest early finding was a collagen rise in lab-grown cells taken from human skin [1][3]. Other dish tests showed that GHK-Cu kept copper from damaging fat carried in blood. It also reduced iron leaving a storage protein by 87% [7]. Less loose iron may protect cells, but these weren't tests in people.

Wound work found more new blood vessels [6][11]. Researchers followed 2 substances tied to wound repair. Of them, 1 helps blood vessels grow, while the substance tied to swelling went down [6]. Most wound tests used cells or rats.

Keep the claim narrow. GHK-Cu changed cells and helped some wounds in animals. Researchers haven't shown that you would get the same kind of help. Your body may act differently, which is why that gap matters to you.

Did GHK-Cu beat retinol in a fair test?

Skin tests tied to Pickart's work were later compared with other treatments. One review reported a collagen rise in 70% of people using GHK-Cu [3]. Vitamin C showed a 50% result, while a skin treatment made from vitamin A showed 40%. A 2025 review repeated the same figures [15].

Here's the catch. This wasn't a full trial that put GHK-Cu against retinol, another vitamin A skin treatment. The work didn't settle wrinkles, side effects, or how long any change lasted. Retinol and its related drugs have had far more study.

GHK-Cu did better on that one collagen check. One small result can't tell you which product fits your skin. The problem you want treated also matters. You can use that limit when you compare claims for your skin.

Why might a GHK-Cu serum fail to work?

Pickart studied GHK-Cu as a joined pair. The copper must stay attached to GHK. In tests, the pair held best near pH 5, which means mildly sour, with a 1:1 copper mix. A sound pair looked blue-violet; brown or green showed that it had begun to break apart [15].

The studies give 2 useful facts about skin products. Test products ranged from 0.05% to 2% by weight. That spread doesn't tell you which amount suits your skin. It shows that no single jar amount has been settled.

Researchers tried liquids that help skin absorb a product, tiny fat bubbles that carry it, and patches with very small needles [15]. One test left about 97 micrograms of copper per square centimeter of skin for 48 hours; a microgram is one millionth of a gram [5]. The paper wrote the slow movement as 10 to minus 4 centimeters per hour. Put plainly, hardly any moved through the skin.

These facts tell you why the amount in a jar isn't the amount that reaches living skin. They aren't use directions. A label alone doesn't reveal how much your skin will take in.

Does GHK-Cu really slow aging?

A review found about 200 billionths of a gram per milliliter of blood at age 20 and about 80 by age 60 [3]. Lab work found repair-related changes [2], and small skin tests found more collagen [15]. Those tiny blood amounts aren't treatment goals. The studies don't prove slower aging. The review can’t tell you whether your body is aging more slowly.

How are GHK and GHK-Cu different?

GHK has no copper. GHK-Cu is the form that holds copper [6]. In cell tests, the 2 forms acted in different ways [6]. Before trusting a claim, check which form the researchers used. Research on one form may not apply to the other form. For your product, you need to know which form was tested.

What may GHK-Cu do for your skin?

In skin studies, GHK-Cu helped cells make collagen and other firm tissue [3]. One review reported a collagen rise in 70% of users. Vitamin C showed 50%, while a skin treatment made from vitamin A showed 40% [3]. These small studies can’t promise the same change for your skin.

Does GHK-Cu make more collagen?

Yes, in a dish. Cells taken from skin made more collagen, the strong support protein [1][3]. The paper’s tiny scale ran from 10 to minus 12 through 10 to minus 11, peaking near 10 to minus 9. Those numbers can’t tell you what belongs in a cream. Those lab numbers can’t tell you how your skin will respond.

How soon might GHK-Cu firm skin?

Small skin studies saw changes within weeks. Firmer skin appeared around two or three months [3]. Those tests can't set a date for you. Products differ, and much of the GHK-Cu in a jar may never reach living skin. You can’t use those weeks to set your own calendar.

Is GHK-Cu better than retinol?

One review reported a collagen rise in 70% of GHK-Cu users. Vitamin C showed 50%, while a skin treatment made from vitamin A showed 40% [3]. A 2025 review repeated those figures [15]. This wasn't a full trial against retinol, so it can't show which works better overall. You still can’t tell which option will suit your skin.

What shouldn’t you mix with GHK-Cu?

Very sour skin products may separate copper from GHK [15]. Some vitamin C products and strong acids may do this. The papers say such mixes can break GHK-Cu apart. Check whether your product label warns against using them together. Your label may help you avoid a mix the maker warns against.

Can GHK-Cu calm swelling?

In lab work, 1 substance tied to swelling went down [6]. Dish tests also found that GHK-Cu blocked copper damage and reduced loose iron by 87% [7]. These cell results don't prove that GHK-Cu will calm swelling in your body. A dish can’t tell you whether your swelling will ease.

Can GHK-Cu help a wound heal?

In rats, GHK-Cu sped wound closure and helped 2 kinds of new blood vessels form [6]. Gels, pads, and coated mesh also kept cells alive and helped rebuild collagen [10][12][14]. No person with a wound was tested, so the work can’t guide your care.

How many genes did GHK-Cu change?

GHK turned many human genes up and many others down. Among those that changed most, 59% became more active and 41% became less active [2]. In one repair set, 41 genes went up and 1 went down. The cell work didn’t prove better health in a person, and it can’t predict your health.
